The fiero I bought was supposedly grounded due to a “bad clutch”. The guy parked it in 2014 or 2015 and just didn’t bother looking into it too much. Turns out, it was actually the slave cylinder being completely shot. The master cylinder too is also a bit....gone. But hey, it works now!!!!
Now, see that clean, bare metal bit? The part that looks like fresh steel?
Yeah that’s where the bleeder vale was....Emphasis on “was”. One good twist with a wrench after some heat and it sheared clean off.
So with the new slave cylinder installed, we began bleeding and adjusting the clutch and shifter. We got it decently complete but we’re replacing the master cylinder due to how nasty the fluid was and the difficulty we had in getting all the air out.
Once that was all settled, we read the codes from the computer and saw nothing conerning. Air filter was new, the O2 sensor was new, the temperature sensors responded and were accurate. So we plugged in the battery, added some gas, and she fired right up.
I now have a running, shifting Fiero. Needs lots of adjustments to get it to something I’d be comfortable driving on the street, but it’s a great start! I need to get the gauges reading, and the interior needs lots of little things. But it was a great first day of wrenching. The brakes are getting replaced at all 4 corners still. All of them look like garbage. That’s pretty standard and could be done in a weekend with my friends with ease. So it looks like I’ll be at woodward this year for sure!

Woof, fiero prices still amaze me. I think I got one of the last cheap ones. Automatic 4 bangers in my area are asking 3-4k. Stick shift GTs are nearing 10k in decent shape.

Check them out after the C8 launches. All those folks who don’t have quite enough for a new vette but more than enough for a Fiero and an LS7 out of a wrecked C6Z are gonna cause those already rising prices to achieve low earth orbit. And that doesn’t include the soon to be incoming radwood inflation.

Yep. I bought this just for radwood-esque cruising and fun shenanigans. I’l fix it up real nice over the next few years and then have something really unique. But geeze if you want one, now’s the last chance for a good one. All my friends are looking into them again too.

Damn, don’t say that...
Porsche 996 prices are climbing back above 20 grand... if Fiero prices climb back above 10 for good ones and above 5 for the repairable ones... I may be missing, or have missed my window.

It’s the nature of being an enthusiast, it seems. Eventually, the true gems of the unloved car world rise up in price when people stop telling each other that a car is bad due to arbitrary biases or hearsay from someone else and appreciate a car for what it is. In this case, the Fiero is the only mid engined, rear drive car produced by GM in.....ever. I think the corvair is rear engined.
It’s cheap to drive, reliable, comfortable, and weird. But there is nothing else like it on the road besides the early MR2s and those are just as rare and are v
aluable too.
The 996 Porsche is a porsche 911. It handles amazingly and drives well. Hate it for the scrambled egg lights all you want, and despise the water cooling every day of the week. It’s still a fantastic car and people have finally broken down and are singing the praises it deserved the entire time. It seems like jsut a year or two ago you could get excell ent 996 turbos for 30 grand. Those days are gone and soon they’ll be 50 grand or more for a decent one if they aren’t already.
